This poem is William Morris' (the great 19th Century artist, poet, and printer) magnum opus. He knows what he is doing, and he has created perhaps the greatest epic poem in at least English literature. He can certainly take a seat beside Chaucer, Spencer, and Chapman. To outdo them or at least to make a claim to match them, he reaches back before their ken to the preliterate age in England, to the greatest story of the time which was only fully preserved in Iceland. He retells it and weaves in or alludes to the other stories of the gods and goddesses of the old Germanic peoples of which the English were part and parcel back then. It all makes for a very convincing and meaningful epic for English speakers. He uses almost exclusively words of Anglo-Saxon and Norse derivation, and orders his poetry in a kind of Anglo-Saxon inspired yet rhyming hexameter ballad! It is really impressive and a true adventure to read and reread! He cleans up some of the more revolting parts of the prehistoric tale (like biting off tongues and so on) and moralizes it a bit, which is absolutely legitimate stuff to do given poetic license. The result is truly awe-inspiring work! This was a favourite read of Tolkien, and it is easy to see its echoes throughout the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien even tried his hand at this Sigurd story itself, which has recently been published. The short of the story is that this tale of Sigurd is seminal stuff for English and even world literature. Even though it seems to have been forgotten in its cohesive form by the 13th Century in England, its strong echoes are felt throughout the Arthurian romances and medieval literature generally. The sword in stone, sleeping beauty, and dragon slaying motifs are right out of Sigurd the Volsung. The Sigurd tale is actually included inside Beowulf as a side story, believe it or not! Beowulf clearly owes a lot to it. England did not really become "literate" in any meaningful way until Chaucer made English writing trendy in the very late 14th Century. This was too late for the orally-transmitted Sigurd to make it into manuscript in England, but it was indeed preserved in Iceland where it was revered as the seminal and most important saga. In Germany it became the Nibelungenlied, which is that country's national epic. Saint George, the patron saint of England, is merely a renamed Sigurd. Morris intended that his poem become the national epic for the English speaking world. I am very sympathetic to this vision of his. However, what then to do with Beowulf, or Chaucer's Troilus and Cressida or the Canterbury Tales? The English made the conscious decision, influenced by historical factors, to shed their Germanic heritage somewhat and look more to France, Brittany, and Wales for their roots, particularly after the devastating few hundred years of Viking raids from their Danish and Swedish cousins. Archbishop Wolfstan of York in the 10th Century proclaimed that the Norse tales were merely rough retellings of original Greek and Roman myths and poems. Still, we do not need to decide which epic is best - we need to enjoy and read all the best epics! What I would love to see is a reprint of the original Kelmscott Press Troy-type printing done by Morris of his amazing poem, like has been done recently for his Kelmscott Chaucer.
This poem still has the potential to become a reference point for English literature and culture. A blockbuster movie is definitely waiting to be made. Comic series probably already are. Like reading Beowulf, Chaucer, Homer, or the Bible, reading this poem is connecting with our culture's ancient roots. It is meaningful and amazing poetry. Just superb! Thank you William Morris! It is so enjoyable to read!
This appears to be a precursor to Richard Wagner's "Der Ring des Niebelungen" As such it may be of interest to those of you who like Wagner.

Good story!
This version ends after Sigurd and Brynhild are no longer a part of the story. In other words, Book IV of the poem is missing. The editors also condense some parts into prose, and the version reads like a novel that rhymes--there are no line breaks at the end of the poetry. If you simply want the basic plot and you like reading quickly, without line breaks, you still might choose this version.
I was introduced to this story from a mythology class i took last year. I learned that this story was one of the influences on Tolkien. For those searching for a deep, heavy book on Norse mythology....this is it.
